Island Raised Cattle Facts

  • Our beef is born and raised on ranches and farms spanning from the Cowichan Valley to Comox.
  • All Red Barn cattle are raised without the use of antibiotics or added growth hormones.
  • None of Red Barn's beef has been medicated after original, provincially-mandated vaccination.
  • All Red Barn cattle are fully traceable back to the ranch they were raised on.
  • Our beef is pasture-raised, grass-fed, then grain finished for a minimum of 90 days.
  • Our beef are quality selected Angus breeds. We like angus beef for the high marbling content. All Red Barn beef is AA grade or higher.
  • All cattle are free range, on average each cow has access to 1 acre of pasture land during the grazing stage.

Island Cattle Raising

  • Calves are vaccinated 2-6 months after they're born.
  • Calves are weened at 6-9 months and moved to pasture.
  • Cattle are raised grazing in an all-grass pasture from 6-14 months.
  • All cattle are pasture-raised, grass-fed, then grain-finished for a minimum of 90 days.
  • At 14-18 months, cattle are placed on a 90 day finished diet of all-natural barley, oats, corn, sugar, alfalfa, and hay
  • All feed is non-medicated, and sourced locally where possible.
  • All beef is dry-aged for 7 days before fabrication.

Island Cattle Production Facts

  • Beef is processed at Gunter Bros. Meat processing, a provincially inspected, approved facility that allows us to ensure food safety, and 100% traceability.
  • Processors consistently meet or exceed the specifications of Canada Grade AA or higher.
  • Our carbon footprint stretches from Victoria to Comox.
  • Island Cattle ranchers are striving to be fully self sufficient by growing their own grains and grasses to feed the animals.

Backgrounding properties are where cattle gain most of their weight. During the spring and summer, cattle graze on pasture, minimally with 1 acre for each cattle, to ensure sustainable farming practices. In fall and winter, grazing areas grow too wet for foraging, so cattle are fed hay harvested from local farms during the summer months.

Depending on whether cattle are grass or grain finished, they might be sent to a feedlot, or a finishing property. Grain finished cattle typically have a higher fat content than grass finished cattle. Most beef we consume is grain finished, which helps achieve the marbling we're all familiar with.

Once they're ready, cattle go to Gunter Bros. Meat Co. Ltd.. Gunter Bros. is the ony facility on Vancouver Island that guarantees 100% traceability, meaning we can trace every package of meat on our shelves back to the ranch it came from.
